The El Basurero Imperial Spa, located in a remote tropical setting, was built by a wealthy sheik in 1884 to house his horses and his harem--in that order.
Sold to the Ritz-Charlton hotel group in 1975, it preserves it's old-world opulence and charm, though it has not been remodeled in 25 years. Known affectionately as the "El," Vogue Travel calls its interior "shabby chic."
